Vimānayāna is a dance adaptation of a theme described by Kālidāsa in Raghuvamśam, an epic poem based on the Rāmāyaṇa. After winning over Rāvaṇa, the wicked king of Laṅka, Rāma flies back to his native Ayodhya on the puṣpaka-vimāna with his wife Sītā and others.
While the journey during their exile in the forest, was an arduous one, the return journey is through the sky on the puspakavimana and is an enjoyable one. The seascape, landscape and the sky above are seen from a bird's eye, as they fly on the puṣpaka-vimāna. The theme not only gives an overview of different places, rivers and vegetation but also describes the emotions of the divine couple amidst nature.
