Kalinga Nartana is a well-known theme taken from the childhood adventures of Sri Krishna.
However this composition is unique for, it involves many Gathi bedas, karanas and charis that are delineated in the lyrics. Krishna and his friends come to the river Yamuna in a merry mood. Upon getting to know that the wicked serpant Kalinga is in the river, Krishna climbs a tree and jumps deep into the water. Much of the action takes place under water itself. Agitated, Kalinga in rage spreads out his hoods and bounces while Krishna cleverly fights back, dancing joyously on the slippery hoods of Kalinga. The thousand hoods of Kalinga with its glowing gems move in circles appearing like a prayer of a devotee doing Neerajana (A grand offering of thousand lamps) to Krishna. Pleased by this beautiful gesture, Krishna summons Kalinga to leave but the serpent continues to attack. Krishna then dances on the slippery hoods of Kalinga and subdues his ego. Finally, Kalinga surrenders to Krishna and people rejoice.
